Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia Sommerlath met in 1972 during the Munich Summer Olympics where Silvia was working as a hostess and interpreter. They announced their engagement on 12 March 1976 and were married on 19 June 1976 at Stockholm Cathedral. Silvia became Queen consort after Carl succeeded to the throne and has held the title since their marriage. The couple have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine.
