Albert, Duke of York, married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. When Albert became king in 1936 following his brother's abdication, Elizabeth became queen consort and later the Queen Mother. During the Second World War the couple remained in London and became symbols of national resilience; Elizabeth famously refused to leave London and said, 'The children won't go without me. I won't leave the King. And the King will never leave.' They remained married until George VI's death in 1952.
